Obelisco

The Obelisco of Buenos Aires is located in the Plaza de la Republica, at the intersection of Avenues Corrientes and 9 de Julio, two of the most important avenues in the city. A national historic monument, and an icon of Buenos Aires, the 221 ft tall obelisk designed by Alberto Prebisch, one of the main architects of Argentine modernism, was erected in 1936 to commemorate the quadricentennial of the first foundation of the city. The monument has only one entrance (on the West side) and four windows at the top that can only be reached by a straight staircase of 206 steps.
