La Recoleta Cemetery
La Recoleta Cemetery located in the affluent Recoleta neighborhood, is one of the most unusual cemeteries in the world. With more than 6,400 graves, all above ground, and each one constructed in a unique architectural style ranging from Greek temples to Baroque cathedrals, visitors can spend hours walking through this cemetery exploring all the burial sites and their elaborate carvings and scroll-work.
The most famous burial site, although probably the least impressive in the cemetery, is that of Eva Peron, the nation’s iconic first lady who died of cancer in 1982. The most interesting thing about her grave is that her body was kept hidden by the then military government for nearly 20 years, before it was interred here, five meters underground, in a fortified crypt, so that no one can ever disturb her remains. Other notable people buried at Recoleta include several Presidents of Argentina, some Nobel Prize winners, the founder of the Argentine Navy and a grand-daughter of Napoleon.
