Floralis Genérica
Floralis Genérica is a flower-like sculpture made of steel and aluminum with an electrical system that enables it to open and close its petals based on the time of day. Its architect Eduardo Catalano once said that the sculpture “is a synthesis of all the flowers in the world” and symbolizes “a hope reborn every day.” Accordingly, the sculpture’s petals open every morning at 8 am and close at sunset. At night, the flower closes completely and emanates a red glow from inside. When its petals are closed, the flower is 75 feet tall and 52 feet wide, and when fully open, it is 105 feet wide. Weighing eighteen tons, the sculpture is located above a reflecting pool in the center of a park in the Plaza de las Naciones Unidas, next to the National Museum of Fine Arts. It is surrounded by walking paths that provide different perspectives of the monument.
