Bariloche, North Patagonia

Situated in the foothills of the Andes on the southern shores of Nahuel Huapi Lake, San Carlos de Bariloche, commonly referred to as Bariloche, is the main tourist attraction in northern Patagonia.
The area was settled by Swiss, German and Austrian settlers in the early 20th century, and still has European flourishes from its rustic wood chalets to craft chocolates.

Bariloche is famous for its excellent skiing, trekking and mountaineering opportunities. Catedral Alta Patagonia, Argentina’s largest ski resort is the area’s biggest draw. Hiking to Refugio Frey, Cerro Llao Llao and Cerro Campanario is also extremely popular. Those who are not as active can go fishing or horseback riding instead.
