Talkeetna, Southcentral Alaska

Located at the confluence of three rivers, the Susitna, Chulitna and Talkeetna, 115 miles north of Anchorage in the Mat-Su Valley of Southcentral Alaska, the tiny hamlet of Talkeetna was once a riverboat steamer station supplying gold miners and fur trappers. Today, it is mainly the jumping off point for climbing expeditions and flightseeing tours of Denali, Mount Foraker, the Moose’s Tooth, and scores of other high peaks. The town itself is very quaint, with two blocks of historic buildings like Nagley’s store, dating back to 1921, the Talkeetna Roadhouse, originally built in 1917, and the Fairview Inn, which hosted President Warren Harding during his 1923 trip to see the completion of the Alaska Railroad. There are also several shops, art galleries, restaurants and a brewery on Main Street. At the end of Main Street is Talkeetna Riverfront Park, offering views of the Susitna River and Denali on clear days.

Talkeetna is a year-round destination for the Alaska Railroad. In addition to twice-daily summer service by the Denali Star Train, which connects Anchorage and Fairbanks, Talkeetna is also home to the Hurricane Turn Train, a round-trip flagstop service through the wilds of the Indian River Valley that departs Talkeetna in the summertime every Thursday through Monday. In the winter, Talkeetna is a stop for both the winter Hurricane Turn as well as the Aurora Winter Train, which also runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks.
