Kenai Peninsula, Southcentral Alaska

A short drive south from Anchorage, the Kenai Peninsula is often called “Alaska’s Playground,” for the wide range of activities that it offers from world-class fishing and river rafting, to kayaking, whale watching, hiking, fat tire biking, cross-country skiing, dog-sledding, snowshoeing, wildlife watching and Northern Lights viewing.

Blessed with natural beauty, the Kenai Peninsula is home to Kenai Fjords National Park, which is famous for the Exit Glacier, a half-mile wide river of ice, the Harding Icefield, which has an area of over 700 square miles, and a rugged coastline that features several tidewater glaciers and abundant marine wildlife. It is also home to Kenai Wildlife Refuge, a 2 million acre refuge that encompasses mountains, tundra, lakes, and forests and is rich with wildlife like moose and bears.

In addition to natural beauty, there’s plenty of human history on the Kenai Peninsula too. Captain Cook explored the region, Dena’ina Alaska Natives lived here, the Russians colonized the parts of the eastern coast, and the Gold Rush spurred development of the Alaska Railroad and various communities. There are also several enchanting towns on the peninsula like Seward, the gateway to Kenai Fjords National Park, Hope, which features several live music venues, Ninilchik, which features rich Alaskan Native and Russian history, and Homer, gateway to Kachemak Bay State Park, a 350,000-acre paradise of glaciers, mountains, protected coves for paddling, and an extensive trail system to explore on foot.
