Ketchikan

Located at the southern tip of the Inside Passage – Ketchikan is the first city as one cruises or drives north along the Inside Passage. It is famous for the many homes that are built on stilts over the water, and the nearby Misty Fjords National Monument, which has several spectacular fjords with steep rock walls jutting 3,000 feet straight out of the ocean, and Totem Bight State Historical Park, which has several examples of historical totems made in the style of Alaskan native peoples who inhabited the area.

31 miles long, but never more than 10 blocks wide, Ketchikan has two large harbors, several cruise ship docks, and some historic streets like Creek Street, which was Ketchikan’s famed red-light district until 1954. The Waterfront Promenade, Ketchikan’s newest boardwalk, offers the best view of the city from Harbor View Park, to the cruise ship docks, to Thomas Basin Harbor.

Ketchikan is also connected with other towns in the Inside Passage via the Alaska Marine Highway. There are several parks and attractions as well as campgrounds along this highway. One of the largest and most popular campgrounds is Settlers Cove State Recreation Park, which offers 14 campsites in a scenic coastal area, surrounded by a lush rainforest.
