Zanzibar

Zanzibar, consisting of the main island of Unguja and its sister island Pemba, has attracted seafarers and explorers from around the world for centuries. With dazzling white, palm-fringed beaches, the azure waters of the Indian Ocean, and the abundant fragrant scents of vanilla, cardamom and nutmeg that give it the name “The Spice Islands,” Zanzibar never fails to cast an enchanting spell on visitors.

Stone Town, the cultural heart of Zanzibar, is blessed with a labyrinth of winding alleys, bustling bazaars, mosques and grand houses whose extravagance is reflected in their brass-studded, carved, wooden doors. It is also the birthplace of legendary rock star Freddie Mercury. Some of the key sights in Stone Town include:
1. The National Museum
2. The Old Fort, built on the site of a Portuguese church when the Arabs took over the island
3. The High Court
4. Africa House, a former English gentlemen’s club and now a boutique hotel
5. The persian-styled Hamamni Baths, built at the command of Sultan Bargash at the end of the 19th century
6. The Freddie Mercury museum, dedicated to the British rock star who was born in Stone Town

In addition to these sights, visitors should not miss the fragrant plantations of cloves, cinnamon, nutmeg and other spices around Zanzibar, the Jozani Forest Chwaka Game Reserve, whose thick forests of 100 year old trees are the last remaining sanctuary of the Zanzibar Colobus monkey, and Nungwi, at the northernmost tip of the island, which probably offers the best swimming experiences in Zanzibar.
