Lake Manyara National Park, Northern Circuit
Located 126 km or 78 miles southwest of Arusha, Lake Manyara National Park is one of the four national parks on the Northern Safari Circuit. It is famous for its tree climbing lions, which spend most of the day spread out on branches of Acacia trees, six to seven meters above the ground. It is also home to troops of baboons, blue and velvet monkeys, huge herds of buffalo, elephant and wildebeest, as well as giraffe, hippo, warthog, zebra and several other smaller animals. The soda ash lake and the woodlands and grasslands surrounding it are a sanctuary for over 400 species of birds including flamingo, pelican, storks, sacred ibis, cormorants and Egyptian geese.
Lake Manyara itself has no outflows and is fed by underground springs and several permanent rivers. It was formed as a result of depression in the rift valley system. However, with the advent of climate change, the lake has shrunk by over 90 percent in the last two decades!
