Dar es Salaam
Dar es Salaam, commonly known as Dar, means “haven of peace” in Swahili. Founded by Majib bin Said, the first sultan of Zanzibar in 1865 or 1866, was once the main administrative center of German East Africa, then of Tanganyika and eventually Tanzania. Today, it is Tanzania’s capital, and its most prominent city for the arts, fashion, media, film, television, and finance, and one of the world’s finest natural harbors.
Dar es Salaam still has several reminders of its colorful past. Dhows ply its waters, while dug-outs, piled with fish, bob by the harbor side. There is an Asian district with many specialty shops, restaurants and temples, as well as a Bavarian style railway station, a Roman Catholic cathedral (St. Joseph’s), a Lutheran church (Azania Front church), and the Botanical gardens and Gymkhana, which are evidence of the British occupation.
