Franschhoek
Franschhoek or “French Corner” in Afrikaans, is a small town in the Cape Winelands, and the Stellenbosch municipality. Surrounded on three sides by towering mountains, the scenery of the town is reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands.
The original inhabitants of the town are the Khoisan people, but in 1688, French Huguenot refugees began populating the area and establishing many farms named after the areas of France where they came from. Most of these farms have grown into renowned wineries today. The heritage of the Huguenots is shown by the Huguenot Monument in the town.
Today, the town is popularly known as the “Food & Wine Capital” of South Africa due to the large number of fine restaurants and wineries in the area. One of the most popular attractions in the town is the Franschhoek Wine Tram, which stops at several of the popular vineyards in the region.
