Merzouga

Located on the edge of the Sahara desert, Merzouga is a small village that serves as the gateway to the famous Erg Chebbi sand dunes. According to tradition, the area was once a tropical jungle, but when a wealthy family refused hospitality to a poor woman and her son, God was offended, and buried them under mounds of sand that became the Erg Chebbi dunes.

The soaring sand dunes at Erg Chebbi shimmer in glowing hues of gold and red with the shifting light. The spectacular desert landscapes, sights of camels trekking through the desert, a carpet of stars at night, and the warmth of the surrounding traditional Berber villages, make Erg Chebbi an unforgettable destination.

The village of Merzouga itself is quite sparse, except for several hotels and restaurants, and camel tour operators who offer camel safaris into the desert. Some of the safaris include an overnight stay at a desert campsite or in a Berber village. There are also several adventure activities offered, including quad bike tours or off-road adventures on the sand dunes.
