Atlas Mountains

The Atlas Mountains extend some 2,500km across northwestern Africa, spanning Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia. The three ranges of the Atlas mountains in Morocco separate the Atlantic and Mediterranean coastline from the Sahara Desert. The first of the three ranges is the Middle Atlas, which runs south of Fes and Meknes and leads up to Marrakech. One of the most famous sights in this region is the Ouzoud cascades waterfalls which plunge 360 feet down a cliff’s edge.

The second, and most visited range, is the High Atlas. It is the highest mountain range in Africa, and home to Mount Toubkal, which is nearly 14,000 feet high. Tourists can trek all the way to the peak of the mountain over two days, to take in spectacular views of the jagged Atlas mountains fading off into the Sahara desert in the distance. This region is also home to Oukaimeden, a ski resort with the highest ski lift in Africa.

The third range is the Anti-Atlas, or Little Atlas, situated in southwest Morocco. Their red and rocky landscape and drier climate allows for excellent mountain biking and trekking opportunities. One of the key attractions in the area is Tafroute, a top spot for rock climbing.
