Okavango Delta
The Okavango Delta is a swampy inland grassland where the Okavango River, which flows from the Angolan highlands, across Namibia’s Caprivi Strip, empties out into a tectonic trough in the Kalahari desert. Each year, about 11 cubic km of water spread over this 6,000 to 15,000 km sq. area, 60% of which is consumed through transpiration by plants, 36% by evaporation, 2% by percolation into an aquifer system, and 2% by Lake Ngami.
The Delta is home to a wide variety of wildlife, ranging from African elephants to lions, blue wildebeest, springbok, greater kudu, steenbok, sable antelope, impala, plains zebra, South African giraffe, African wild dog, Nile crocodile, hippos, East African cheetah, African leopard, multiple kinds of baboons, over 400 bird species, and over 70 fish species. It has been named as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Africa.
