Palacio Real (Royal Palace)

The Palacio Real, or Royal Palace, in Madrid is one of Europe’s most impressive and well-preserved royal residences. It serves as the official residence of the Spanish royal family, although it is primarily used for official ceremonies and state functions rather than as a private residence.

The construction of the Palacio Real began in the 18th century during the reign of King Philip V, the first Bourbon monarch of Spain. Of its nearly 3,000 rooms, visitors can explore several notable rooms like the Throne Room, Hall of Columns, Hall of Mirrors, Royal Chapel, and the Royal Armory, which boasts an impressive collection of armor, weapons, and ceremonial items. The Royal Palace also houses an extensive collection of art, including paintings by renowned artists like Velázquez, Goya, and Caravaggio.

The Changing of the Guard ceremony takes place every Wednesday and Saturday at the main entrance of the palace. It is a colorful and ceremonial event that attracts tourists.
