Casa Batlló

Built between 1904 and 1906 during the Catalan Modernese period, Casa Batlló is one of the two great buildings designed by Antoni Gaudí on Passeig de Gràcia, the other being Casa Milà, also known as La Pedrera.
More than just a building, it is a work of art and a testament to Gaudí’s visionary architectural talent. Its innovative design, use of materials, and incorporation of symbolism make it a special and iconic landmark in Barcelona.

From the outside the façade of Casa Batlló looks like it has been made from skulls and bones. The “skulls” are in fact balconies and the “bones” are supporting pillars. Gaudí drew inspiration from nature, and the façade is often likened to a dragon’s back or a whimsical underwater world. The irregular, wavy lines and use of colorful ceramic tiles and shards of glass contribute to its unique appearance and create a shimmering effect in the sunlight. The interiors of the building feature curved wooden surfaces, stained glass, and wrought-iron elements, showcasing Gaudí’s attention to detail.

Casa Batlló is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is part of the “Works of Antoni Gaudí” UNESCO listing, along with other Gaudí-designed buildings in Barcelona. It is open to the public as a museum, allowing visitors to explore its stunning interiors and learn about Gaudí’s life and work. The guided audio tours provide insights into the history and significance of the building.
