Meiji Shrine

Meiji Shrine (Meiji Jingu) is one of Tokyo’s most iconic and revered Shinto shrines. It was established in 1920 to honor Emperor Meiji (Mutsuhito), who played a crucial role in modernizing Japan during the Meiji Restoration, a period of significant political and cultural change in the late 19th century. The shrine buildings are made of cypress wood and copper, following the architectural style of the Meiji period (1868-1912). The Shrine is surrounded by a lush forest called Meiji Jingu Inner Garden (Meiji Jingu Gyoen). This 170-acre forested area contains over 100,000 trees donated from all over Japan and overseas, creating a serene and natural atmosphere that contrasts with the urban surroundings.

Upon entering the shrine grounds, visitors pass through a massive wooden torii gate, marking the transition from the secular world to the sacred realm of the shrine. Next, they visit the main hall, where they can pay their respects, make offerings, and participate in Shinto rituals. Adjacent to the main shrine complex is the Meiji Memorial Hall, which houses various exhibitions related to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. It also serves as a venue for cultural events and exhibitions.

Visitors can purchase ema, wooden plaques on which they can write their wishes and hang them at the shrine. Omikuji, or fortune-telling slips, are also available, offering insights into one’s future. They can also enjoy peaceful walks through the forested grounds around the shrine, especially during cherry blossom season when the trees display vibrant colors.
