Bahamas
“It’s better in the Bahamas,” is the slogan for this nation of nearly 700+ islands located in the Lucayan Archipelago, which is technically in the North Atlantic Ocean, and not the Caribbean, though the islands are loosely considered to be in the Caribbean.
Whether you’re a young couple in search of romance, an adventure traveler, or an old timer ready to relax and soak up the sun during their golden years, the Bahamas is a place that caters to every island fantasy.
The Bahamas was a British Colony by the 17th century, and the Port of Nassau was established in 1670, supported by the trade of sugar, cotton, and tobacco. The archipelago made the region a hotspot for pirates, and The Bahamas harbored many of the region’s most infamous pirates. In fact, it’s said there’s still buried treasure on many islands. After numerous uprisings from enslaved peoples and wartime struggles, The Bahamas was granted self-governance in 1964 and later independence in 1973, a date still honored today with the annual July 10th Independence Day celebrations.
The Bahamas has some of the most beautiful waters in the Caribbean. From seafoam green to turquoise blue and every hue in between, the vast ocean landscape reflects the cloudless skies above it and provides a warm habitat for an underwater world below. Beaches range from extensive shorelines of the one-mile-long Tropic of Cancer Beach, Pig Beach to swim with resident pigs, and the unique Pink Sands Beach, which needs no filter to reveal its distinctive pink color. Hold your breath and plunge into the depths of the coral surrounding Great Guana Cay or Rose Island Reef to see the beauty of the waters come alive before your eyes with marine life and colorful reefs. The Bahamas’ vibrant colors don’t end at the shores however. The capital, Nassau, is sprinkled with rainbow-colored buildings. Walk the friendly streets to discover the cultural heartbeat of The Bahamas. Take in the scent of authentic island cooking filling your nostrils, feel the textures of craft art made by the hands of locals, and hear the melodic sounds of the island inviting you to sing along too.
