Puerto Rico

Located in the northeast Caribbean Sea, about 1,000 miles (1,600 km) southeast of Miami, Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States. The territory consists of the main island and several smaller islands like Mona, Colabra and Vieques. The capital and largest city in the territory is San Juan.

Originally settled by a succession of indigenous people starting nearly 4,000 years ago, Puerto Rico was colonized by Spain when Christopher Columbus arrived on the island in 1493. During the Spanish reign, the cultural landscape of the island changed, with the influx of many African slaves and European traders. It wasn’t until the late 19th century when a unique Puerto Rican identity emerged which fused elements from the indigenous, African and European cultures. After the Spanish-American War in 1898, Puerto Rico was acquired by the United States and the island’s residents were declared US citizens in 1917.

Puerto Rico has several attractions from breathtaking natural landscapes, to adventure activities, and vibrant towns and cities. Some of the key attractions in the territory include:
1. The San Juan Historical Site, which includes the fortress “El Morro” and La Fortaleza, which is now the Governor’s house
2. The Casa Bacardi, the art-deco family-run Rum distillery where around 100,000 liters of Rum are produced daily!
3. El Yunque National Forest, an 11,700 hectare tropical rainforest
4. Toro Verde Nature Adventure Park, which is home to “The Monster,” the world’s second longest zipline
5. Three of the five bioluminescent bays in the world (Laguna Grande in Fajardo, Mosquito Bay on Vieques, and La Parguera in Lajas)
6. The Cañón de Tanamá in Utuado, where visitors can explore a network of caverns, canyons and tunnels amid limestone cliffs
