Fairbanks, Interior Alaska

The second-largest population center in the state, Fairbanks is the Golden Heart of Alaska, and gateway to Denali National Park, and the Interior and Arctic regions. Located at a latitude of 65 degrees north, Fairbanks experiences 70 straight days of sunlight from April 22 to August 20. Similarly, in the winters, it experiences and extended period of darkness, making it one of the best places in Alaska to view the Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. There are several Northern Lights viewing tours departing from Fairbanks that include excursions to remote locations for viewing the lights, as well as various winter activities like skiing, ice skating, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, tubing and making of ice sculptures. During the summer, Fairbanks is equally action packed, with abundant opportunities for hiking, camping, golfing, kayaking and cruising down the Chena river while enjoying the Midnight Sun.

Fairbanks is also an important transportation hub in Alaska. The city has a busy airport, is served by several routes on the Alaska Railroad, and is at the intersection of three major highways – the Richardson highway, a 368 mile long stretch that runs from Valdez, through Anchorage to Fairbanks, the Steese Highway, which extends 161 miles from Fairbanks to the town of Circle, located on the Yukon river about 50 miles south of the Arctic circle, and the Dalton Highway, a 414 mile stretch that runs from Fairbanks into the heart of the Arctic region, and ends in the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay on the Arctic ocean.
