Norris Geyser Basin
The hottest geyser basin at Yellowstone, Norris Geyser Basin has two sections – Porcelain Basin and the Back Basin. Porcelain Basin has a very barren landscape with lots of steaming vents, spouting geysers, bubbling and boiling geothermal features, and several turquoise blue hot springs. There is a boardwalk around the whole area. The entire trail is about 1.1 miles (1.7 km) long, but the main loop is only 800 m. Visitors should be aware that there is no shade in the area, and it can get extremely hot in the summer. Back Basin on the other hand, has much more shade, as it is located in a pine forest. The star of this area is the Steamboat Geyser, the largest active geyser in the world. Visitors should plan at least two hours for a short visit. A more detailed visit can take a half day.
