Antalya

Antalya is the largest city on the Lycian coast, also known as the Turquoise Coast for its clear blue waters. Believed to have been founded around 200 BC when King Attalos of Pergamon gave an order to “find me a heaven on earth,” Antalya was later a part of the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman empires. It was also briefly ruled by Italy, in the aftermath of World War I, before being recaptured by an independent Turkey.

Today, Antalya is Turkey’s biggest international sea resort and a major tourist attraction. The city has several historical monuments like Hadrian’s Gate, built in 130 AD to commemorate the Roman emperor’s visit, and the 2nd century Hidirlik Tower, which offers spectacular views of Antalya’s harbor. It is also famous for its several magnificent beaches, hidden bays and coves, a vibrant nightlife and an excellent gastronomy scene. There are many taverns, folk bars, and English Pubs for those who wish to experience nightlife in Kaleiçi, the historic city center of Antalya, and several excellent restaurants that offer culinary delights from Lydian, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman times.
