Midway Geyser Basin

A few miles north of the Upper Geyser Basin, the Midway Geyser Basin is home to the Grand Prismatic Spring, one of the most breathtaking sights in Yellowstone. Bigger than a football field, and deeper than a 10-story building, the Grand Prismatic Spring is the largest hot spring in the United States, and the third largest in the world. It is also the most photographed site in Yellowstone due to its mulit-colored layers, from deep blue in the center to greenish and yellow tints on the next layer, to bright orange around the edges. Visitors should plan to spend 1-2 hours to visit the Spring as the parking lot can get quite full, and there are several viewpoints, including the Viewing Platform which offers unbeatable aerial views of the Spring. The colors are the brightest in the middle of the day, but the crowds are typically thinner early in the morning or late in the evening.
