Mount Rainier National Park, Washington

At 14,410 feet above sea level, Mount Rainier is an active stratovolcano that towers in the background of the Seattle skyline. The Mount Rainier National Park, established in 1899 as the fifth National Park in the United States, includes all of Mount Rainier, and forests, valleys and meadows surrounding it. The mountain is circled by the Wonderland Trail which covers many glaciers and snowfields. Some of the key locations in the park are:

1. Paradise, the main visitor center for the park
2. Sunrise, located at 6,400 feet and offering spectacular 360 views of the volcano and its surrounding valleys
3. The Grove of the Patriarchs Trail, a 1 mile loop trail with towering 1,000 year-old Douglas fir and western red-cedar trees
4. Sliver Falls and Skyline Trail
5. Longmire, the homestead of James Longmire, an explorer who found the geothermal springs in the area and founded the Longmire Hotel and Spa
