Mount Fitz Roy (Cerro Chaltén), South Patagonia
Located in the northern part of Los Glaciares National Park, on the border with Chile, Mount Fitz Roy, also known as Cerro Chaltén is a towering peak that rises 3,405 m above sea level. The mountain was first discovered in 1877 by Argentine explorer Francisco Moreno, who named it after Robert Fitz Roy, the British captain who had charted large parts of the Patagonian coast in 1834. The mountain’s aboriginal name is Cerro Chaltén, which means “smoking mountain” in the Tehuelche dialect. It was given this name because the top of the mountain always appears to be surrounded by clouds. There are some trekking paths that visitors can explore, but the hikes are very strenuous and the weather is typically quite harsh.
