Purmamarca
A small village about 4 hours north of Salta, and on the way to Salinas Grandes, Purmamarca is located near the brilliant Cerro de los Siete Colores, a colorful rock formation with seven layers of sediment accumulated over the last 600 million years, each with a different color, ranging from bright reds to pinks, golds, and greens. The town is also the gateway to the breathtaking Quebrada de Humahuaca, a multi-colored mountainous valley and UNESCO world heritage site that runs for nearly 100 miles on the drive from Argentina to Bolivia.
The village of Purmamarca itself has a vibrant artisan market where you’ll find woven goods, ceramics, textiles, and other genuine products made by indigenous artisans, an austere white church called Iglesia de Santa Rosa De Lima, which dates back to 1648, and several restaurants that are famous for Argentinian favorites like empanadas, tamales, humitas and llama meat.
