Puerto Madero

Puerto Madero is a revamped dockside area, and one of the most modern and upscale barrios in Buenos Aires with sleek skyscrapers, a variety of restaurants, high-value apartments, and the famous Puente de La Mujer, an iconic pedestrian only suspension bridge across the Rio de la Plata (Plata river), that rotates 90 degrees to allow ships to pass by.

Originally a functioning port, between 1897 and 1912, the area started decaying after the construction of a new port to accommodate larger cargo ships. In the 1990s, local and foreign investment led to a massive renovation effort and the decaying warehouses in the areas were converted into elegant houses, offices, and lofts. The opening of the Hilton Buenos Aires in 1999 quickly accelerated the appeal of the area, and several luxurious hotels, restaurants, apartment complexes and movie multiplexes were built.
