La Boca

Located in the south-east of the city, near its old port, La Boca is a heavily Italian barrio (neighborhood) that is world-famous for El Caminito street, with its colorful houses, street artists and tango dancers, and the La Bombonera stadium, the home of the the Boca Juniors football club where Diego Maradona once played.

Like New York City’s Lower East Side and London’s East End, La Boca is the barrio where new immigrants first settled when they arrived in Buenos Aires. The earliest immigrants, the Spanish may have arrived as early as 1536, but mass settlement began in 1830, with a large influx of immigrants from Genoa in Italy. By the early 1900s, La Boca was the second most populated area in the city, but the construction of a new port in Puerto Madero, led to its decline. A revival of the area was led by the famous local artist, Quinquela Martin in the 1950s. He painted the houses in bright colors, and began to host outdoor theater here, which led it becoming a favorite location for the street artists and tango dancers you see today.
