Enryaku-ji Temple
A Tendai (a Mahayana Buddhist school established in Japan in the year 806) monastery, overlooking Kyoto, Enryaku-ji was founded in 788 by Saichō, a Japanese Buddhist monk credited with introducing the Tendai school of Buddhism to Japan, and with being the first to bring tea to Japan. The temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most important monasteries in the country. It was attacked and largely destroyed in 1571, and was subsequently rebuilt during the early Edo period (1603-1868).
The key attractions of the temple are the Todo (east area), Saito (west area) and Yokawa, located several kilometers north of the other two areas. The Todo area is where the monastery was initially founded and where most of the main buildings are located. The Saito area includes the mausoleum of Saichō, the temple’s founder, and the Shaka Hall, the oldest building on the mountain. A pleasant walking trail connects the Todo and Saito areas.
