Hakone & Mt. Fuji

A part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park located less than 100-km from Tokyo, Hakone is a natural wonderland that is famous for its proximity to Mount Fuji, its hot springs, outdoor pursuits, and cultural sights.

One of the main attractions in Hakone is the scenic Lake Ashi, which is surrounded by mountains and provides stunning views of Mount Fuji on clear days. Visitors can take a sightseeing boat tour on the lake, or hike the trails that wind around it. Another popular attraction is the hot springs or “onsen,” which are said to have healing properties due to their mineral content. There are many Ryokans (traditional Japanese inns) in the area that offer onsen facilities, as well as traditional Japanese meals and accommodation.

Hakone is also known for its outdoor activities, such as hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding. The Hakone Ropeway, a cable car system that provides panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, is another popular attraction in the area. As for those interested in art and culture, Hakone has several museums, including the Hakone Open-Air Museum, which features sculptures and artwork from both Japanese and international artists.

You can tour Hakone as a day trip if you leave early enough in the morning and limit your sightseeing to a few key attractions, but adding an overnight stay, including a soak in a hot-spring tub, is definitely recommended.
