Essaouira

Essaouira (essa-weera), located on the Atlantic coast in the western part of Morocco, is often called the “Wind City of Africa” for its famous coastal wind, the beautifully named Alizee, or Taros in Berber. The town is enchanting, with a vibrant blue and white medina (walled city), sand-colored ramparts, imposing stone gates (Babs), spice-scented lanes, palm-lined avenues, a colorful port filled with bobbing fishing boats, and a beautiful beach. As indicated by its name, which means “little picture” in Arabic, the town is a dream location for a painter. Several wind surfers visit here between April and November, but the majority of visitors arrive in the Spring and Autumn.
