Basilica di Santa Croce

The Basilica of Santa Croce is the principal Franciscan church in Florence and the largest Franciscan church in the world. It is most famous for being the burial site for some of the most illustrious Italian scientists, artists, musicians, and philosophers including Michelangelo, Machiavelli, Rossini, and Galileo Galilei, who was tried by a Roman inquisition, and was not allowed a Christian burial until 1737, 95 years after his death. There is also a memorial to Dante, but his sarcophagus is empty (he is actually buried in Ravenna as he was exiled from Florence).

Construction of the current church, with its sixteen chapels, began on May 12, 1294, possibly by Arnolfo di Cambio. It was consecrated in 1442 by Pope Eugene IV.
